Sea Bouldering at Skala on Kefalonia

When we were on holiday in Kefalonia this year we went to Skala as we had heard there were some boulders in the sea you could climb.  You can get to them by driving to the front at Skala and then heading right along the beach front road and parking at the very end.  Be careful of turtle nests in the sand though!

You can see the boulders on this map :

When we got to the beach I tied my FiveTen shoes into three plastic bags to keep them dry because I would be swimming for a long time and I wanted to keep them dry for as long as possible.

Me and my mum then started swimming along the coast to the boulders. After a long thirty minute swim we arrived at the boulders and I changed into my shoes and tried some of the easier and smaller boulders. I noticed the the rock was very sharp and they were inhabited by lots of water-fleas hidden in the cracks!

I then swam for another five minutes to the biggest boulder and tried some of the climbs, they were really hard! The water was quite deep around them so it was safe to fall in without worrying about hitting the bottom.

Sometimes I put my scuba mask on my face while I was climbing so if I fell I could look at the beautiful fish in the clear water below.  My Mum then swam back too look after my little brother and my Dad came out to the boulders.

When I got to the top of one of the harder climbs (a sort of project!) I jumped off the top but unfortunately my fingers slipped off my nose when I went in the water and lots of sea water went up my nose.  This made me feel really sick so I swam back with my Dad.

If you go to Kefalonia I would recommend you give them a try – they are quite easy to find and it’s great fun!
